Salon Lighting for Haircoloring

For haircolor purposes, the consultation and work environment should be very well lit. Lighting in this area is very important. I suggest a mixture of lighting effects. What I mean by this is; if possible, try to have equal amounts of incandescent lighting, florescent lighting and natural lighting coming in from the windows or skylight. If you have all of one type of lighting in the salon, the haircolor can look very different in the client’s home or in different lighting situations. For example, florescent lights are blue; therefore, if the lighting is all florescent, it can make a blonde look green. (Blonde hair is yellow and blue lighting can create a green cast on the hair). So, a lot of blondes will look green under purely florescent lighting. Florescent lighting can also make a redhead look brown, because of the cool nature of this type of lighting. It will bring out the cool color in the hair, which is ash and it will suppress the warm colors in the hair (golden and red). This will make redheads look more brown and less red. Incandescent lighting is very warm. This can make a blonde look brassy or red.

And 100% natural lighting is not great either because it will give off too much warmth and produce a false sense of red also if you rely solely on 100% natural lighting, you would be limited to doing haircolor only during daylight hours ☺ Since there is no perfect lighting, I suggest a mixture of all three. I find that with a blend of all three types of lighting, you get much more realistic looking haircolor and the client is less likely to call after she gets home to tell you that in her bathroom, her haircolor doesn’t look anything like it did in the salon. In our salon we use florescent lighting as general ambient lighting, and we have an incandescent halogen spotlight over each chair. We are also fortunate enough to have plenty of large windows with an abundance of natural indirect lighting streaming through most of the day. I welcome your comments and suggestions. David

Salon Lighting 101

Salon Lighting 101

Educate yourself on the basics of salon lighting for your hair styling and color area. Here is what you need to know when working with a designer or contractor for an effective lighting design.

Salon lighting should flatter the complexion and compliment the interior. Bulbs come in a variety of temperatures ranging from very warm to cool. A warm temperature bulb (3,200 to 3,500 Kelvin) is the most flattering on the complexion and compliments most salon interiors. Cool temperatures (4,800 Kelvin) can equate to daylight (a sunny afternoon) and is typically not the most flattering temperature (think about being out in broad daylight and how your skin looks in the sun). Daylight/cool temperature bulbs will grey-out warm interiors as well as wash-out guests.

Salon lighting should accurately render color. Have you ever heard stories about guests receiving hair color and make-up applications in the salon only to walk outside and the color appears different? The simple solution is to utilize bulbs in the space that accurately render color. How well a bulb accurately renders color is determined by the bulb’s Color Rendering Index which represents the quality of light and its faithfulness to render colors. Be sure to request bulbs that have a Color Rendering Index (CRI) of 80 or higher.

Salon lighting should be positioned to eliminate shadows. How a guest looks in the salon chair is crucial in the salon environment. If a guest feels good about their appearance, it reinforces a positive experience for repeat business and increased revenues. The easiest way to help eliminate shadows on the face is to position wall lighting on either side of the mirror to directly light the complexion. This too should be a flattering temperature bulb (3,200 to 3,500 Kelvin). Spotty lighting above, such as track fixtures, will also create shadows. In this type of application, wall lighting on the face is even more important.

Invest in energy-efficient bulbs for long term savings. Both Florescent and Light Emitting Diode (LED) bulbs have revolutionized energy efficient lighting. When possible, request salon light fixtures that support these types of lamps. With a wide variety of color temperatures and high Color Rendering Index options, these bulbs are ideal for the salon environment especially for general illumination. Although these lamps are typically higher in cost to purchase, the investment is worth it as these lamps have long life, use less energy, save on maintenance and replacement costs and provide long term savings.

Salon work station. Your salon station lighting comes from two places: the front (wall/sconce lighting) and overhead. The wall lighting is for direct illumination on the face to flatter the complexion and face. The overhead fixtures provide your general overall lighting to perform tasks as well as light the space. If the overhead lighting is properly designed, this will provide enough lighting to perform all of the required tasks for hair styling and color application. Separate task lighting is not required if the overhead lighting is properly configured. Proper overhead lighting will vary from space to space depending upon the ceiling height and type as well as how dark or light the space is. Here is where a lighting designer who understands the intricacies of salon lighting come into play.

Add some sparkle. Typical florescent or LED bulbs, while a wonderful source of general lighting, can be flat. To add some sparkle to the hair, place a halogen bulb directly over each styling chair. Halogen bulbs are flattering with a high color rendering index and are typically used to showcase jewelry and expensive products. Why not provide your guests with this same luxury? Over-use of halogen bulbs or using halogen bulbs as your main source of lighting will cause shadowing. In addition, the life of halogen bulbs is much shorter than florescent or LED lamps.

The best lighting for your salon combines a variety of lighting to suit its particular purpose. While you don’t have to be an expert here, the idea is to be able to effectively communicate the basics so that you can explore all your lighting options to fit your budget and assure a successful result.

Properly Lighting a Salon’s Retail Area is one way to increase your profits

Having manufactured and produced lighting for the specialty retail market for over 30 years we’ve learned a thing or two about the importance of retail lighting. With over 900 salons under our belt since Minardi Color Perfect Lighting was created we’ve seen what does and doesn’t work when it comes to your salons retail area. Despite retail playing a major role in overall profitability, what we’ve found is that the retail area is an often neglected part of a salon. Many salons simply put product on a shelf and either light it improperly or don’t bother to light it at all. This is a sure recipe for DECREASED retail sales.

(Note how dull and boring this product display appears due to a lack of lighting – nothing stands out and says “look at me”)

Using proper lighting in a retail environment will impact the consumers’ emotional state, behavioral intentions, and perceptions. Consumers are attracted to certain lighting and in a retail environment knowing the correct ways to illuminate that environment is critical. The type of lighting needed for the retail areas of a salon is often referred to as accent lighting. Accent lighting is generally much brighter than the surrounding lighting. The reason for this is that accent lighting must stand out and make an impact. If accent lighting were not brighter than the general lighting in a salon the retail areas would not stand out and be noticed, they would simply blend in and risk being ignored.

(Notice how the retail area stands out from a distance along with the product colors looking vibrant due to the brightness of the lighting in the retail area as compared to its surroundings)

While using a backlit display is visually attractive it does not create the same impact as direct lighting does. The “look” of a backlit display is more on the “exotic” side and in certain applications they are quite effective. However, for most salons, the amount of light that is produced by this type of lighting will not cause it to be noticed as much as a front lit display.

If money is no object than the best way to light retail displays will be a combination of both backlit and direct lighting. This will combine the exotic look that the backlit display creates while making the products and their colors “pop”.
(Notice how the combination of backlit and direct lighting create a perfectly lit display that is almost guaranteed to attract attention)

In closing, promoting the retail area of a salon through the proper use of lighting is essential to increasing this profit center. If salons go through the trouble of choosing the best products for their clients the least they can do is to make them stand out and be noticed. The more your clients use your carefully chosen retail products the better they will look between visits which is a compliment to the hard work of the colorists and stylists.

Small business focus: inside a hair salon’s lighting retrofit

Anyone who manages a retail business knows there’s no end to the challenge of managing costs. Retailers who provide personal services such as beauty therapy or hairdressing are prime examples, calmly attending to clients in opulent surrounds while constantly being on the lookout for ways to reduce overheads.

Lattouf International Hair Salons operates eight stores throughout Melbourne. In an effort to increase profits, managing director Shady Dargham embarked on a strategy to improve efficiencies across the group.

“I began by considering all the non-core activities involved in running a salon,” Dargham explains. “I noticed all the little things that take up time, and I learned that small maintenance issues can affect a business in more ways than most managers realise. In our case, it was light bulbs. No matter which salon I visited, there always seemed to be at least one globe not working.”

Dargham realised that, apart from having a negative impact on salon ambience, the need to constantly replace light bulbs was taking attention away from clients, as well as the added safety risk every time a staff member climbed a ladder to change a light bulb.

“When I analysed our expenses more closely, I noticed electricity represented quite a high proportion of our overall costs, so I began to investigate new lighting options,” he explains. He turned to cherryLED, which installed more than 20 LED downlights to deliver an even, inviting glow throughout one salon in Malvern’s Tooronga Village Shopping Centre.

Running at a fraction of the cost of traditional lights, LEDs can reduce lighting bills by up to 80 per cent. Plus, with a lifespan of 13 years or more (compared with just 3,000 hours for standard lighting), it will now be years before the salon will need to change a globe.

“Based on the success of this pilot project, we are planning an LED lighting upgrade for all of our eight salons to take full advantage of the energy cost savings,” Dargham says.

However, it’s not just about the bottom line. Any good retail strategy aims to maximise repeat business and to achieve that, customer satisfaction is critical. Even small changes in lighting can make a world of difference to the customer’s experience in-store.

“There are big challenges in lighting a salon,” Dargham says. “The lighting inside must match the outside environment if colours are to be accurate. cherryLED offers an LED light that mimics daylight, so retail spaces can be lit to match. As a hairdresser, I feel confident knowing that when I’m colouring a client’s hair, the result is going to be spot-on. When our customers step outside, they’re always happy. And a happy customer is a repeat customer.”

Cool to the touch, LEDs can also provide intimate and directional lighting for display cabinets and shelves, without any potential fire hazard or risk of damaging stock.

“Because they’re inexpensive to run and operate at a low temperature, we can even leave a few lights on overnight, attracting more eyes to our retail window while enhancing security,” Dargham says.
